GETTING TO AND AROUND MELBOURNE

How to get to Melbourne City

Transportation from the Melbourne Tullamarine International and Domestic airports is by taxi or bus.

·     SKYBUS operates an airport service that can take you to many of the hotels in the Melbourne CBD. It departs the airport every 15 minutes for most of the day (30 mins in off-peak times) and is a 24 hour/7 day a week service. Adults one way A$ 12.00 per person Adults return trip A$ 21.00 per person. Contact Sky Bus at Telephone: (03) 9670 7992. Or visit the Sky Bus website at http://www.skybus.com.au

·     CAR HIRE services are available at the international terminals once you are in the main area of Melbourne Airport. http://melbourneontheweb.com makes it easy for you to book your car online.

How to get around Melbourne City

Melbourne is a very easy city to get around, and with the streets in the Central Business District (CBD) in the form of a grid, it's easy to navigate yourself around. Melbourne is the only city in Australia which still has TRAMS as a major part of its public transport system. In fact, It has the largest tram network in the world! Trams are an efficient way of transport within the city as well as to the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Most routes provide services towards and away from the CBD, however, in the inner eastern and southern suburbs, some routes provide convenient travel to a wide range of destinations. The brown City Circle Tram is a free service that travels around the city and links with other tram and train routes in and around Melbourne. The tram will take you past shopping malls and arcades, and major attractions such as the Old Treasury Building, Parliament House and the Princess Theatre. To catch the free City Circle Tram service, just wait at any of the specially marked stops on the route. They run in both directions every twenty minutes, from 10am to 3pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm on weekends. Around the CBD and immediate suburbs, if its not brown, you must buy a ticket from an on board machine, or from newsstands.

Melbourne also has an extensive BUS and TRAIN service. All tram lines radiate from the central city. Apart from the underground city loop, stations are above ground, and are spaced at one to two kilometre intervals. Unlike tram services, which are largely confined to the inner suburbs, Melbourne’s rail network reaches out to distant suburbs. Train services on most lines arrive/depart every 15 or 20 minutes on weekdays, every 20 minutes on Saturdays, and about 30 minutes on Sundays.

The Multi-modal metcard tickets allow you to travel on trains, trams, and buses in Melbourne, giving you convenience and saving you time. Furthermore, tickets are available for 2 hour travel, daily travel, weekly, and yearly travel, with student concessions available upon presentation of the Student PTC Concession Card. For maps and timetabling, see http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au .

Most urban taxis in Melbourne are yellow and have a large light on the roof. There are taxi ranks in various spots throughout the city and taxis can also be hailed or booked by telephone, but will incur an extra cost. Extra costs also apply if the taxi passes any toll booths. Prices are quite reasonable and tipping isn’t expected. Most taxis will accept credit cards or EFTPOS. Phone: Taxis Combined: 131 008, or ABC Taxis: 132 522

CONFERENCE VENUE, INTERNET, COMPUTING, AND OTHER FACILITIES

The conference venue, Storey Hall (RMIT University), is situated at 328 Swanston St (click to see the map), diagonally opposite the Melbourne Central train station, and directly opposite the State Library of Victoria. Inside the State Library of Victoria, you will find computer access, photocopying facilities, and in many parts of the building, wifi and bluetooth access to the www. As well as an extensive academic library, with the top floor of the La Trobe reading room holding an extensive array of Australiana materials, well worth a visit.

ATM FACILITITES AND CURRENCY

Australia's currency operates on a decimal system, with the dollar (AUD$) as the basic unit and 100 cents (¢) equalling $1. Paper money comes in $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5 denominations, differentiated by colour. Coins are minted in $2, $1, 50¢, 20¢, 10¢, and 5¢ denominations. Banks are open Monday to Thursday 9:30am to 4pm and on Fridays from 9:30am to 5pm. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are available throughout the city round the clock.
